"KITA21 - Shapers of the Future" - in short "KITA21" is a joint educational venture between S.O.F. Save our Future - Umweltstiftung Hamburg and Leuphana University of Luneburg. Combining academic findings and pedagogical expertise, this German initiative aims at integrating sustainability education (ESD) in kindergartens and preschools. Also, it supports public awareness of ESD in general and KITA21 in partiular.
Offering adivce, training and networking services, KITA21 has been run successfully in Hamburg's metropolitan area since 2008 and recognised by the German UNSESCO Commission as an Official Educational Measure suporting the Decade of "Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014".
Central to KITA21 is the recognition of kindergartens and preschools as so-called KITA21, marking them as places of sustainable learning. Between 2008 and 2014, roughly 200 "Kitas" located in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony have successfully dealt with aspects of sustainable development and have therefore been recognised as KITA21. Nine of these KITA21 institutions are actually located in Hamburg-Harburg. They worked on various issues related to environmetnal protection, climate action and global equalaity.
