Harburg Sustainability Prize 2016

Three winners and three special mentions. By Chris Baudy

In August 2016, Harburg's parliament had invited local future-oriented initiatives to apply for the Harburg Sustainability Prize. On November 25th, 17 applicants and 80 visitors came to the local town hall to see who would get the prize worth 2,000 euro this time. The fourth Local Sustainability Award was handed out to three initiatives: The free shopping initiative (Umsonstladen Harburg und Mehr Wert Kultur) received 1,000 euro for their multi-cultural and socio-economic approach towards free giving and taking - to save resources and protect the environment -  as well as towards supporting local musicians and artists.  The nursery school "Kita Hafencampus" (Inland Port Campus) came second and took 600 euro home for their early education project on water, which combines ecological, economic and social issues. The final winner was awarded 400 euro: a university-based Cradle-to-Cradle (C2C) initiative who offer educational services at the local Technical University to spread the concept of circular economy and the related products and production processes.

Additionally, three more sustainability actors received a special mention:
(i) "fairKauf Hamburg / Upcycling" for its ecological, socio-economic and also innovative project as they offer reintegration for jobless locals and provide low-income families with household goods, textiles, garments, games and the like. (ii) "Buero WasserLand" (Waterland Office) who include schools and residents in local water projects for a clean and healthy environment. ZEWU (Centre for Energy, Water and Environmental Technology) was the third candidate honoured by a special mention for their new environmental refugee education programme that combines technical know-how and language learning.
